In an extended celebration of the World Autism Awareness Day, Easel Art Foundation of Guwahati organised an art workshop and on-the-spot art competition at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra Art Gallery for the differently-abled children of Destination, an NGO operating to serve the target groups in the city on April 4. Rupa Hazarika, President of Destination, runs her organisation from Bhagaduttapur area in the city and caters to over 80 differently-abled inmates of which 42 are children. It runs two shelter homes to cater to the needy people of the area.
Wahida Ahmed, freelance artist and Director of Easel Art Foundation & Gallery, who was the living force behind the programme said, “Art is a creative medium through which the differently-abled people find recreation and a sense of fulfilment. This is precisely the reason for which we decided to hold this workshop and on-the-spot art competition for the inmates of Destination.” As a matter of fact, Wahida is involved in different programmes involving the children of Destination for a long time. She also holds workshops and related programmes for rural and underprivileged children, which she claims is her passion. A person of different abilities, Wahida is presently engaged in the production of a documentary film titled ‘Ajan’ that would showcase the art of jikir and promote harmony in the society.
In his address as the appointed speaker of the event, Dr Navanil Barua, Director Neurosurgery, GNRC Hospital lauded the efforts of Easel Foundation in general and the enthusiasm of Wahida to serve the society in particular. He told the audience that besides serving the differently-abled people, Wahida is also rendering great service to the artist community of the Northeast by giving them an avenue to exhibit their paintings and earn handsome amounts from the sale of their art pieces. Another distinguished guest at the event, Sanjib Narayan, a doyen of cultural arena of the State, expressed his satisfaction on being involved in a noble programme such as this.
