“Mix and assimilate to promote brotherhood,” says Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury

“If people are laughing at you, it’s perhaps time for you to find out why people are laughing at you. If you have a defect, find it, and rectify it. Improve yourself. Mix and assimilate with people, and then you will find people standing by your side in times of your need,” this was the message from Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury, senior advocate of Gauhati High Court, in his acceptance speech after receiving the Shahidul Alam Choudhury Memorial Award at the Minority Welfare Society (MWS) annual general meeting held in Guwahati on Sunday. The award consisting of a plaque, memento, and cash component of Rs 25,000 was handed over to Hafiz Rashid by LR Laskar, IAS, Adviser to the Govt of Mizoram, Aizawl.

While introducing Hafiz Rashid and his achievements to the audience, Atiqur Rahman Barbhuiya, Executive Member MWS, informed that Hafiz Rashid was the topper of LLM examination at Aligarh Muslim University and again topper of MA (Arabic) examination from Gauhati University. He had served as a teacher of law at Sokoto University in Nigeria from 1983 to 1985. Today he occupies a place of honour in the legal profession besides his many achievements as a social and political leader.

The Dr Razia Sultana Memorial Award, given to the Best Medical Student of the Community, was handed over by Dr FR Choudhury, a renowned gynaecologist of Tezpur, to Anisa Nazneen Choudhury, who had secured the first position in BAMS & BHMS CEE in the State, and now pursuing a course in medicine.

While presenting the annual report for the year 2016, AW Chowdhury, mentioned about different welfare activities taken up by the Society notable among those being meritorious students’ felicitation, blood donation, micro finance support to the economically handicapped persons and routing the zakat funds for humanitarian causes. MHA Choudhury, President, MWS informed the members that the forthcoming programmes include publication of the new edition of the members’ directory and holding of a get together for the Haj Pilgrims belonging to the community.

At the valedictory session, prizes were distributed to youngsters who topped in the various competitions organised on the occasion. The fifth volume of the MWS annual journal ‘Barak’ containing articles based on historical research and useful information for the members was released by dignitaries present at the meet. The community feast at the meet was hosted by Dr FA Barbhuiya, Assistant Professor, IIIT Guwahati.
