Fashion Designer Omi Gurung receives Young Naturalist Awards 2016 at Balipara Foundation Awards.
The fourth Balipara foundation Awards were formally announced on November 9 at Eastern Himalayan Naturenomics Forum 2016 held at Hotel Vivanta by Taj, Guwahati Assam. The Awards were conceived by Balipara Foundation in association with Sanctuary Asia, one of India’s leading environmental publishers to honour green heroes for the year 2016. Since the inaugural Awards in 2013, it aims to highlight the outstanding achievements of individuals, communities and organization working within the field of conservation.
Fashion Designer Omi Gurung (Sandeep Gurung) from Sikkim was conferred with Young Naturalist Award 2016 for his immense contribution towards sustainable development and creating green eco-friendly fashion. He was felicitated with a citation and monetary reward . He will also unstinted support from Balipara Foundation for his future initiatives to Conserve and Preserve Natural Heritage of the Eastern Himalayas.
The Young Naturalist Award was given to Omi by Armstrong Pame (IAS officer Manipur), the officer who had build 100kms road in Manipur without government help.
Omi shares some trivia “The Environmental Protection Act was formed on 1986 and a historic decision to make Sikkim Organic State was passed on 24 February 2003 in Sikkim Legislative Assembly. And my date of birth is 24 February 1986. I guess I was born to be a green crusader”.
Omi also becomes the first male recipient of Young Naturalist Awards by Balipara Foundation.
14 countries, 12 states and 9 multilateral and bilateral organisations participated at the Eastern Himalayan Naturenomics Forum 2016 and Balipara Foundation Awards 2016. Emmy award-winning producer and multi award winning director, WOW Media CEO Nicholas Claxton hosted the EHNF 2016 and Balipara Foundation Awards 2016. Business tycoon and Chairman of Balipara Foundation Ranjit Barthakur, CEO of Wildlife Trust of India Vivek Menon, wild life conservationist Bittu Sahgal, Dr. Kamal Bawa ,World’s leading botanist Peter Raven, Renowned Flautist Hari Prasad Chaurasia, noted technocrat S. Ramadorai were present during the function. The award ceremony also had the participation of organisations like WWF, IUCN, Sanctuary Asia, WTI, ATREE and many others. Pandit Hariprasad Churasia did a jugalbandi with music and conservationist Mala Ramadorai while Rhythms of Manipur entertained the crowd with Rhythmic Rain- percussion Ensemble.
