Rongali – a three day festival to celebrate Assam

Assam a land of diverse culture, exotic nature has all the ingredient to become a preferred tourism destination. However, the State hasn’t been able to attract and develop tourism at the desired level. Rongali- Celebrating the essence of Assam is an attempt to promote Assam as tourism destination and to build bridges amongst the various tribes and communities.

Rongali is being organised from April 3 to 5, 2015 at Veterinary Ground, Khanapara, Guwahati. Rongali would showcase the lifestyles, food habits of various tribes to be presented by various councils, the rich history of Assam from the days of Bhaskar Burman, Su Ka Pha, Sankaradeva upto Bhupen Hazarika, its rich traditional handloom and handicrafts, delicious Assamese foods and Northeastern Food, other forms of Indian Food would be on display. Colourful dance forms of the State, Ram Vijay Bhonaby Sangeet Natak Academy, tea exhibition, magic from Mayong, mask making from Sivasagar, traditional gohona of Nagaon. Famous Assamese innovator Udhab Bharali would present unique innovation by Assamese innovators. Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship would present successful Assamese enterprises, unique eco-tourism projects will be on display, eco-tourism society of Assam would showcase traditional sports of Assam. A display of Assamese literature by legendary writers of the State and the upcoming ones would be on display.

 

Rongali would be a place to see entire facets of Assam in a Carnival atmosphere. Three evenings of amazing cultural performance would present Assam’s top singers like Zubeen Garg, Papon, Simanta Sekhar, Priyanka Bharali, Manas Robin, Tarulota Kutum, North East Breeze, Joshua Queah, Moo & the Shootings stars and India’s top rock band Indian Ocean and heavy metal band Girish & the Chronicles. Two fashion shows on April 4 and 5, would present best of Assamese designers and fabric.

 

Several reputed tour operators across India, tourists are expected to visit during Rongali and the witness the colourful display of Assam. Rongali is organised by reputed Trust of Assam Trend MMS in association with Hotel & Restaurants Associaiton of Assam. Assam Tourism, Deptt of Cultural Affairs, Govt of Assam, Ministry of Youth Affairs, Govt of India.

 

Shyamkanu Mahanta, the Chief Organiser of Rongali informed that Spicejet is the Airlines partner and is promoting Rongali in Boarding Passes and various magazines of Spicejet. Mahanta also informed a roundtable discussion is organised called “Development Agenda of Assam” on 4thApril, 2015 in association with Guwahati University. 25 top personalities from various fields – economy, politics, sports, culture, academics, business, media etcare being invited to deliberate on agenda to be developed for future Assam. The deliberations would be documented in the form of a book and would be released later on.

 

Mr. Arun Sharma, President, HRAA informed that Rongali is an attempt to make Assam a preferred tourism destination and a beginning is being made.
