Human Rights Day is observed every year on December 10. It commemorates the day on which, in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 1950, the Assembly passed resolution 423 (V), inviting all States and interested organisations to observe this day every year as Human Rights Day. In Guwahati, the Stars of North East (SoNE), a group for empowering youth, celebrated the day with the differently abled children at Destination in Kahilipara Guwahati.
Destination has two shelter homes for the differently abled, one for the adults, and the other for the children. The one for the children has about 50 inmates. It is one of the most well managed such homes in the city. The members of SoNE had visited Destination last on Aug 7, 2016 to celebrate World Friendship Day with the children there. Thereafter they had decided to extend support to this organisation on an ongoing basis.
This time, the members of SoNE raised money among themselves to buy rice, dal, cooking oil, snacks, fruits, colour pencils and drawing boards to hand over to the management of Destination for the benefit of the children. Sazish ul Hoque, a leading restaurateur of the city, sponsored the dinner for the children for the evening. Two members of SoNE, Dr Rezwan Hussain and Neyajuddin Ahmed, made an assurance to arrange wooden cots for the children so that they feel a little more comfortable during the winter months.
Salma Hussain, the only internee (2016) of the National Human Rights Commission from the North East, spoke to the media persons present on the occasion and said, “Child rights are an integral part of Human rights and that is why we decided to come here to remind ourselves and the society what we need to do for the children looking forward to our help and support.” Syed Mohsin Raja, digital and social media expert, announced that he would create a special social media domain to help raise support for Destination.
Monmi Das, Vice President, and Chumki Bora Gogoi, Project Coordinator, Destination, while thanking the members of SoNE for their gesture, requested the group to explore the possibilities of arranging an outdoor picnic for the children of Destination in the near future. SoNE officials on their part assured continuous cooperation to Destination.
