TINAT ATIFA MASOOD
The morning after Christmas, I went deep into my thoughts and realised that I haven’t done anything for the sake of Peace; not in 2017, not in the years before that. It has become a habit that I have always been looking for someone else to make a difference. But what about me? When will I start making the difference? Was I waiting for something earth shattering to occur when I will be bound to be a part of the change?According to Stephen Hawking, the world is at the edge of becoming uninhabitable. And if we don’t do something about it, we will be sorry!
I picked up the phone and called Dr. Akashitora and asked her if she would support me in a Peace Walk for the sake of World Peace. She simply said, “Do it, I am with you all the way!” And then over the next few days, she went about her own special way of telling people about the walk, calling them, sending them Whatsapp messages, tagging them on Facebook, inviting them to be a part of it. Next, I called up Satyen Mahanta, one of the founder members of Swayam – An Approach, who, as always, said he will do everything in his capacity to make the walk a success. And he did!
All of us spread the message that we have an absolutely new year to look forward to in 2018 with 365 days to create changes in the world. If we start taking one day at a time and create changes in the lives of people who need us the most, the World will look better and maybe, just maybe, we can initiate the reverse process of making the Earth habitable once again. We can at least start by making Peace the most hep and happening word!
And with this theme, we embarked for the next few days on an expedition to make the Peace Walk a success. The permission process which would have taken longer was expedited in just a day by The Commissioner of Police, Hiren Nath. We are grateful towards his supportive gesture.
Friends and well-wishers called in and said they loved the idea and that they would join us for the Peace Walk on the morning of 31st December, 2017 at 6 am. It was an overwhelming feeling to see so many of our friends and also some people taking their morning walks, join us in the walk for Peace. The bottom line is that everyone wants peace. No one wants to even utter the words violence and hatred. So, while walking from Dighali Pukhuri to Uzanbazar and back, we knew we had a lot to do for the sake of peace. There’s a huge responsibility on each one of us to make the World a more habitable place. Instead of blaming others for not doing what should be done, we have now taken the onus to do one good thing, maybe something minuscule, everyday for the next 365 days of the year 2018.
In this way, love, positivity, humanity becomes a huge chain process! Each one, inspire one! Each one, make peace the mantra!Everyone, make peace the most used word in 2018. I would like to thank each one of my friends for the huge support they displayed for the Peace Walk, though ideated by me but now belonging to the People of Guwahati! Even though I am not mentioning individual names here, but I could see the passion burning inside each one of them to only do good for the World! Let this fire burn inside each one of us and we make the most of the new year. Let’s give Peace a chance!
