In a bid to commemorate the death anniversary of the iconic lady from Assam who rose to be DCP, Delhi Police, late Yamin Hazarika, a memorial function will be held on July 24, 2016 in Guwahati.
The memorial meeting has been organised by Women’s Hub, a collective of women professionals from different walks of life. Yamin Hazarika was born in Guwahati to Late Sirajul Hussain Hazarika and Shameem Ara Hazarika. She was a 1977 batch DANIPS (NCT of Delhi, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli Police Service) officer.
Hazarika was a recipient of Nirman and Mahila Shiromani awards. Yamin Hazarika, deputy commissioner of police (crime against women), known for her impeccable track record in the force, including a three-month stint in Bosnia, died on July 24, 1999. She was 43. It was in Bosnia, where she was posted as part of the UN peacekeeping force, that she was found to be suffering from leukaemia. She was treated at Mumbai’s Tata Memorial Institute and at AIIMS, Delhi where she passed away.
To commemorate her memory, the Yamin Hazarika Woman of Substance Award, 2016 will be given to a distinguished woman. A panel discussion on “Women: Breaking Stereotypes” will be held on the occasion.
