Zubaan’s ‘Cultures of Peace’ in Guwahati

In collaboration with Zubaan and the Heinrich Boll Foundation, the Northeast Writers’ Forum organised ‘Cultures of Peace’, a festival celebrating writing, culture, politics, discussion and food from the Northeastern states.

In the inaugural session Urvashi Butalia of Zubaan spoke on the festival and its focus on northeast India. Srutimala Duara, the Secretary of Northeast Writers ‘ Forum spoke on the Forum activities mentioning the translation projects it had done, about the authors from India and abroad who were invited by the Forum over the years since its start in 1997.


There were intensive discussions with active participation from the audience on five topics: Travellers’ Tales, Challenges of Ethnicity, New Directions in Writing, Women and the Media, The Translator’s Dilemma. The panelists were Teresa Rehman, Anuradha Sarma Pujari, Monalisa Changkija, Srutimala Duara, Meenaxi Barkataki, Gobinda Prasad Sarma, Mitra Phukan, L. Somi Roy, Arup Kumar Dutta, Bijoy T Singh, Surajit Borooah, Ananya Shankar Guha, Arzuman Ara and Bibhash Choudhury.

Three books by writers from Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Manipur were released. There was a turnout of more than a 100 guests in Gauhati Town Club auditorium.
